The Board of Directors of NAPCP has decided to alter the membership requirements for new members of the Association from 1st September, 2017. The changes are as follows:
- Applicants for Student Membership of the Association will be required to be studying for a degree in a counselling related area which meets the Educational Award Standards for Counselling & Psychotherapy as set out by QQI (2014) and which will lead to the attainment of a Level 8 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. This change will be implemented on 1st September 2017.
- Applicants for Pre-Accredited membership of the Association will be required to hold a degree in a counselling related area which meets the Educational Award Standards for Counselling & Psychotherapy as set out by QQI (2014) at Level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). This change will be implemented on 1st September 2021.
- All applicants for Pre-Accredited membership (Associate Membership) will be required to have completed a minimum of 50 hours personal therapy within their degree programme and a minimum of 120 hours of direct Client work under clinical supervision at a ratio of one hour supervision to 5 hours of direct client work. Client work refers to individual or couples client work only. Clinical supervision must be undertaken with accredited Supervisors.
Providers of degree programmes in counselling and or psychotherapy applying for NAPCP course recognition must have their programmes validated by QQI, an Irish University (or equivalent international academic awarding body) at Level 8 on the NFQ which meet the Educational Award Standards for counselling & psychotherapy as set out by QQI (2014) as well as other clinical/professional requirements as stipulated by NAPCP.
From 1st September 2023, the minimum qualification requirement regarding applicants presenting for First Time Accreditation will be a Degree in Counselling/Psychotherapy at Level 8 on NFQ.
