1) Recommendation from a friend
Recommendation from a friend who has attended a counsellor for a similar problem.
2) Recommendation from health professional
Recommendation of a doctor, public health nurse or other profession.
3) Accrediting body
Contact an accrediting body e.g. the National Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (NAPCP) or look at their website for a list of counsellors in your area.
An advertisement in a journal, newspaper, website.
5) Ask key questions
When you contact a counsellor ask him/her about:
- Their experience of dealing with similar issues e.g addiction, relationships etc.
